Obituary for Heather Hughes Shumate

Heather Dawn Hughes Shumate, age 38, of Chilhowie, VA. passed away on January 29, 2018 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her father Clayton Hughes, grandparents, Walter and Kate Hughes, Mary Virginia and Jim Hayden.

Heather is survived by her husband Greg B. Shumate
Her children Cory Hamm, Kaitlynn Hamm and Colton Hamm of the home.

Her mother Mary Helen Hughes and companion Clarence Greer of Chilhowie, VA

Special grandparents Ruby and Eugene French of Tannersville, VA

She is also survived by a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, and many other friends and a family of co-workers.

Heather has dedicated a huge part of her life with helping others, especially children. She has made an impact on hundreds of children in both Smyth and Washington Counties as well as the City of Bristol. She started her career working at Virginia Highlands Community College in the financial aid office. She then went to work for Washington County schools where she served as the Jobs for Virginia Coach. She helped many teens find employment or helped them to enroll in college. Heather also served Smyth County School’s system as the Guidance counselor at Chilhowie Elementary School. She has always advocated for children and their needs. In 2009, Heather joined the Crisis Services Staff at Highlands Community Services. Heather played an instrumental part in the development of The Safety Zone which has served hundreds of children in the area. She has worked with local community agencies, schools, as well as Washington County Sheriff’s Office to make sure that children were going home and safe. Heather had just recently become licensed as a Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. She was very passionate about her work and was loved dearly by her co-workers and all who knew her. Although Heather devoted a great amount of time to her work she still loved her time with her children and her family

Funeral services for Heather Shumate will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2018 in the D.R. Henderson funeral Home with Pastor Robert Blevins and Pastor Barry Loupe officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
