Obituary for Helen E. Frye

Helen Ernestine Frye
Abingdon, VA

Helen Ernestine Frye, 83, departed this life at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia on November 22, 2017 following a brief illness.

Miss Frye was born May 15, 1934 near Saltville, Virginia. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Lysanders and Iona Feeney Frye, her sisters Samye Leonard, Mary DeBusk, Jamie Fuller, and Eva Davidson. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Maiddie & Mike Pierry, and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-neices/nephews.

Helen was educated at Meredith College and the University of Virginia, and she studied at Universidad de Salamanca in Spain and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She taught English and Spanish for 30 years at R.B. Worthy (Northwood) High School, and served as sponsor of the Spanish Club. After she retired from teaching, Miss Frye tutored missionaries traveling to Hispanic locales.

Despite contracting rheumatic fever as a young child that left her with numerous physical challenges, Miss Frye lived a life full of learning, art, music and travel. Her family will miss her sharp wit and wisdom. The family wishes to thank the staff at English Meadows Senior Living Center in Abingdon for the care and attention provided during the final phase of Helen’s life.

Helen’s wishes were to be interred with her parents at Elizabeth Cemetery, without a traditional funeral service.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday December 2, 2017 at Madam Russell Memorial UMC with Rev. Tim Best officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday prior to the service.
