Obituary for Howard Tivis Smith

Howard Tivis Smith, Sr., of Johnson City, TN, passed away at age 70 on May 26, 2018 after a hard fought battle with colon cancer. He was a native of Grundy and Saltville, VA, born January 4, 1948 in Grundy to Tivis and Ruth Smith. He graduated in 1966 from Grundy Senior High School and also attended Rich Valley High School. He was a lover of sports and enjoyed his time as a VHSL basketball and football official for more than 20 years. He was a member of Madam Russell United Methodist Church while living in Saltville. After moving to Johnson City, TN 25 years ago, he became a member of First United Methodist Church. He worked over 20 years at Don Smith Ford in Greenville, TN and recently retired from Wallace Imports of Johnson City. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Donna Daugherty Smith, two children Michelle Hartzog and husband Richard of Saltville, and Howard Tivis Smith, Jr. and wife Heather of Chilhowie. He also has three granddaughters, Carrie Hartzog, Kristen Hartzog, and Jessie Smith and fiance Collin Bazyk. Also surviving are three brothers, Don Smith and wife Judy of Kingsport, Ed Smith and wife Girt of High Springs, FL, and Earl Smith and wife Brenda of Saltville. Two sisters, Merilyn Armstrong and husband Dave of Pulaski, and Mildred Surber and husband Charles of Saltville. Brother-in-law Jim Daugherty and wife Carolyn of Lakeland, FL, three sisters-in-law, Wanda Smith, Peggy Johnson, Phyllis Daugherty, and several very special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. His brother, David Smith of Rogersville, TN preceded him in death. His family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Michael Grosserode for all the years of dedicated care and the nurses and volunteers at the Regional Cancer Center in Johnson City for their services. Special thanks also goes to the Scripture Study Class of First United Methodist Church for their love and support. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday May 29, 2018 at Madam Russell United Methodist Church with Rev. Jane Taylor and Rev. Tim Best officiating. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church prior to the service.
