Saltville, VA

Shirley Keith Carter, age 79, was at her home surrounded by loving friends and family when she went to be with her Lord, February 12, 2018. Shirley’s life was defined by self sacrifice, unconditional love and genuine concern for the well being of her fellow man. Her door was always open to all. Her family and friends loved her for her strong will and beautiful spirit. She was the Pastor of Saltville Church of the Nazarene, a member of Saltville Ministerial Association since 1994, member of Saltville Weekday Religious Program since 1972, member of Saltville Bread of life Food Pantry since 1998, member of Saltville Liaison Panel (Town and Olin Corp.) since 1998, Saltville Health Center Commission since late 1970s, Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems from inception until 2015, Saltville Town Council for 3 years in late 1970s, Secretary of Saltville Chamber of Commerce. She was very much involved with initiatives dealing with drug problems in her community and Community Garden. In 2016 Shirley was a recipient of the Virginia Mountains Most Beautiful People Award.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl K. Carter; daughter, Mitzie Carter Greer; mother, Beatrice Keith; brother, Larry Dean “Bo” Keith

Shirley is survived by her daughter Suzanne Carter Abramson and husband Markus of Queen Creek, AZ; grandson Ernest William “TJ” Greer, Jr. of Saltville; grandchildren, Misti Greer of Marion, Brett Abramson and Zachary Abramson of Mesa AZ; great grandchildren, Marra and Stephen Havener, Luke Thompson and Tristen Mylek; sisters, Pat Taylor and husband Millard of Knoxville, TN, and Judy K. Barrett of Saltville; brothers, San Keith and wife Betty Jo of Marion, VA, and Robert Lee Keith and wife Linda of Saltville; son-in-law Ernest “Tuffy” Greer of Saltville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday February 15, 2018 at Henderson Funeral Home with Rev. George Stevenson and Pastor Joe Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Memorial donation may be made to Saltville Church of the Nazarene.
