Obituary

Barney Leon Clear

Rich Valley, VA

Barney Leon Clear, age 73, was born on May 6, 1952, and passed away peacefully at his home on January 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, following a short illness.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents, Garnett and Carrie Clear; his parents-in-law, Joe and Kate Whitehead; and his brother, Benny Clear.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Esther Carol Whitehead Clear. He leaves behind his beloved daughters: Shanon Clear Griffin, husband Ritchie, and their children Emerald (husband Trevor), Lauren, and Trey; and Bethany Clear and Walter, and their children Dennis (wife Joanna). He is also survived by his brother Christopher "Hoppy" Clear and wife Janet; his brothers-in-law Robert Whitehead (Evonne) and G.C. Whitehead (Retta); and his sister-in-law Dellamae Wilson, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom he will never forget—and who will never forget him.

Barney proudly served his country in the United States Army as a military police officer. He was a dedicated member of Rich Valley Lodge No. 172. Above all else, Barney cherished life on his farm, where he found his greatest joy. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and deeply loved the land he worked.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to all of Barney's friends who called, texted, and visited during his illness. They also express sincere gratitude to Caris Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude's in Barney's name.

Barney's life was defined by love, service, hard work, and family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Ridgedale Cemetery with Pastor Scott Spence and Pastor Jeremy Dunn officiating. There will be military rites rendered by the United States Army Honor Guard and V.F.W. Post #4667. Everyone is asked to please meet at the cemetery.
