Betty Burkett Smith, age 85, went home to be with the Lord on July 16, 2025, at Agape Rehab and Nursing Facility in Johnson City, TN. She was born in Saltville, VA, to the late Arlie Burkett and Flossie Barbrow Burkett. Betty was proud to be part of the first graduating class of R.B. Worthy High School in Saltville. A lifelong Christian, Betty was a devoted member of the First Church of God Allison Gap, where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years. She loved traveling across the United States on Sunshine Tours and enjoyed sightseeing adventures. Betty treasured time spent with her family, especially when everyone was together for the holidays. She was an excellent homemaker and will be remembered for her kind spirit and loving heart.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Miles A. Smith; two brothers, R.G. Burkett, and Shirley Junior Burkett; sister, Helen Cassell; and brother-in-law, Milton Aust.
Left to cherish her memory are her two siblings, Felix Burkett and wife Peggy of Vinton, VA, and Brenda Aust of Draper, VA; special nephew and caregiver, Scott Cassell and wife Angela of Glade Spring, VA; nephews, Chris Cassell and wife Tonya of Bluff City, TN, Mike Burkett and wife Dawn of Mooresville, NC, Missy Weingart and husband Derek of Denver, CO, Holly Hall and husband Rueben of Athens, AL, and Laura Poe of Athens, AL; special great-nephews, Derek Cassell and wife Emma of Columbus, OH, and Tyler Cassell of Johnson City, TN; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Harris officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service. The burial will be following at Mount Rose Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Tyler Cassell, R J Burkett, Rueben Hall, Ethan Hall, and Michael Burkett.
