Betty Johnson
Tolley
Apr 4, 1932 — Aug 16, 2026
Glade Spring
Glade Spring, Va.
A faithful servant was welcomed with the words she had long lived for: "Well done, good and faithful servant." On August 16, 2026, Betty Johnson Tolley went home to the Lord she loved so dearly. There, she was reunited with her beloved husband, Arthur "Star" Tolley, and together they now rejoice in the presence of the Savior they faithfully served.
Above all else, Betty loved the Lord. Her relationship with Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life and the guiding force behind everything she did. A devoted member of Main Street Christian Church in Saltville, Virginia, Betty faithfully served as a deaconess and was known by all as a true prayer warrior.
If you knew Betty, chances are she had prayed for you. Prayer wasn't just something she did. It was simply who she was. She believed with all her heart in the power of bringing others before the Lord and faithfully prayed for her family, friends, neighbors, and even those she had only just met. Her gentle spirit, compassionate heart, and unwavering faith reflected God's love, offering comfort, hope, and encouragement to everyone blessed to know her.
One of God's greatest earthly blessings to Betty was the love she shared with her beloved husband, Arthur "Star" Tolley. Their marriage was built on faith, devotion, laughter, and unconditional love. She loved Star fiercely, and even after his passing, she spoke of him with the same love and admiration that had defined their life together. Their family finds great comfort in knowing they are together again, praising the Lord they both faithfully served.
As a young woman, Betty proudly served as a high school majorette, leading with energy, enthusiasm, and school spirit. Throughout her life, that same joyful spirit never faded. It simply found a greater purpose. The same passion and dedication she once displayed on the football field became even more evident in her walk with Christ. As a faithful prayer warrior, she lived each day with unwavering devotion, faithfully lifting others in prayer, offering words of encouragement, and pointing them to the Lord.
Betty also dedicated many years to serving children at Glade Spring Elementary School, where she retired after working as a secretary, teacher's aide, and reading aide. She found joy in encouraging young minds and making every child feel seen, valued, and loved. Whether through her work, her church, volunteering in her community, or simply the way she cared for those around her, Betty lived a life of humble service and generosity.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arthur "Star" Tolley; her parents, J.R. and Mattie Johnson; and her brothers, J.R. Johnson, Roy Johnson, and Bill Johnson.
She leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her memory: her children, Butch (Judy) Tolley, Benny Tolley, Barry (Kim) Tolley, and Barbara (Rick) Faust; her beloved grandchildren, Amy (Blake) Mellinger, Emily (Brandon) Boyles, Byron (Holly) Tolley, Brittney Tolley Morris, J.D. (Christine) Faust, Amanda (Michael) Black, Katie (Justin) King, and Alex (Brenna) Faust; her treasured great grandchildren, Connor Boyles, Caroline Boyles, Mason Mellinger, McKenna Mellinger, Sophie Tolley, Beau Tolley, Areli Morris, Willow Morris, Cora Faust, Summer Black, Chesney Ann King, Charlie King, Parker King, and Ellie Faust; along with numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and her cherished church family.
Though her family grieves her absence, they rejoice in the assurance of God's promise fulfilled. Betty's faith has become sight, her prayers have become praise, and the Savior she faithfully served throughout her life has now welcomed her home. Her legacy of faith, love, compassion, and prayer will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice team, especially Nurse Chris and Nurse Taylor, for the compassionate care, kindness, and comfort shown to Betty and her family during her final days.
Funeral services celebrating Betty’s life and unwavering faith will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday August 19, 2026 at Main Street Christian Church in Saltville, Virginia, with Minister Stan Dunham officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Ernie Catron, Jonathan Catron, Rick Buchanan, Jeff Buchanan, Tom Gentry, and Alex Faust. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Main Street Christian Church.
