Obituary

Wytheville, VA

Bobby Dwaine "Poe" Hess, age 55, slipped into Heaven Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Carilion New River Hospital, Christiansburg, Virginia.

Poe will always be remembered as a true family man, and he was proud of that. Everywhere you saw him, you also saw "his woman." The two were inseparable. As much as he was a faithful and loving husband, he was also a devoted father who centered his life around his wife and son. To Poe, they were everything. If you were feeling down, Poe was the one to go to for a pick-me-up. He had a special gift for making people feel important and always made a point to check in on others. He enjoyed watching television on his phone and spending time with his red heeler. Poe would jokingly tell you the dog only stayed around because "Bupples would bite you if I tried to get rid of him." Throughout his life, Poe worked at the Hosiery Factory in Damascus and later served as manager for several years at the Little Oil Company, in Glade Spring. He also drove a dump truck for Mr. Davidson and most recently was known throughout the community as the milk man for Huffard's. His love and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Leann Hess; parents, Willie and Tiny Widener Hess; in-laws, David Stillwell and Mary Virginia Able; brother, Michael Hess; and brothers-in-law, John McGhee and Jim Mazza.

Poe is survived by his loving "woman," as he affectionately called her, Terry Hess; son, Bobby Wayne "Bud" Hess and fiancé, Courtney Quinley; sisters-in-law, Teresa McGhee and Melissa Mazza; several nieces and nephews including Christopher McGhee, Aaron Wilson, Kristen Wilson, Megan Wilson, and David Wilson; special aunt, Liza Kennedy; numerous cousins including Johnny Yarber, Jeff Yarber, Ellis Widener, and Jodi Widener; red heeler, Bupples; and a host of many other loving family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
