Carolyn Galliher
Broyles
Jul 29, 1937 — Apr 30, 2026
Glade Spring
Glade Spring, Virginia
Carolyn Galliher Broyles, age 88, passed away after a long illness on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Carolyn was a devoted mother not only to her own children, but to many others who lovingly knew her as "Mama Too." Through her hard work and dedication, she opened two daycare centers, beginning with Mrs. B's Nursery and Daycare in Greeneville in 1965, and later The Children's House in Abingdon in 1995, where she often stayed around the clock to care for the children entrusted to her. That same love only grew deeper when her grandchildren came into her life. Her kindness extended far beyond children. Any animal in need of feeding found its way to her, often receiving more than enough, and at times even a temporary home, including raccoons. If people and animals weren't enough, she also poured her love into her flowers and garden, which became a source of great pride. Carolyn was once featured in the newspaper for her beautiful landscaping, and Patrick Henry highlighted her historic home, dating back to 1792. In her spare time, she enjoyed crafting, making jewelry, stained glass, pottery, and drawing. Her artistic talents were reflected in the murals she created in her daycare. Above all, Carolyn had a deep love for the Lord. She made it a priority that her children and grandchildren knew Him as well, faithfully taking the grandkids to Saltville Baptist Church in their younger years. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Etta Phillips Galliher; and sister, Janie Fox; and her well-fed and much-loved dog, Roxie, who joined her in Heaven the same day.
Carolyn is survived by her significant other of 29 years, Danny Hutchinson; children, Kevin Broyles and wife, Vicki, of Knoxville, TN, Jerry Broyles and wife, Jodi, of Bluff City, TN, and Selina Steele and husband, Tom, of Glade Spring, VA; sister, Linda Cummings of Blountville, TN; 9 grandchildren, Ryan, Chris, Noah, Laura, Anna, Zachary, Seth, Melissa, and Mathew; 13 great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Westley, Virginia, Gavyn, Jadyn, Fin, Kyler, Trinity, Josiah, Madison, Matthew, Jr., Maddux, and William; great-great-grandchild, Davian Steele; several nieces and nephews; and a host of many loving friends.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 20241 Green Springs Road, Abingdon, VA 24210. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Prater officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
