Abingdon, Va.

Carrie Nipper passed away Friday, August 16 in Abingdon at Johnston Memorial Hospital at age 92. She was a lifelong caregiver, a devoted wife and loving and proud mother and grandmother.

Born Carrie Juanita Francis Call on May 22, 1932, in Chatham Hill, Virginia and graduated from Rich Valley High School. She was the first daughter of five siblings, growing up on the family's farm.

Carrie married Douglas Nipper and made their home in McCready's Gap, in a house on the hill overlooking the Holston River. She worked as a caretaker and homemaker while Doug worked at Olin Mathieson and American Furniture. They had one child, Connie Sue Nipper.

Carrie spent her life in service to others and took care of her husband and daughter until the end of their lives. She read anything she could get her hands on, loved a ripe spring strawberry and always had room for just a bite of something sweet.

Carrie was preceded in death by her husband Douglas Allen Nipper, her daughter Connie Sue Nipper Jackson, her parents Thomas Frazier and Viola Virginia Coulthard Call, her siblings Harvey Lee "Buck" Coulthard, William Thomas "June" Call, Daisy Mae Edwards and Ella Gray Waddell, niece Ruth Ann Waddell Miller and nephew Gary Wayne Waddell.

Survivors include her grandson Drew Jackson and wife Kerry O'Connor, great-grandson June Thomas Jackson, son-in-law Charlie Jackson and several cherished nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2024, at Elizabeth cemetery in Saltville, Va. with Pastor Barbara Farmer officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at Henderson Funeral Home prior to going in procession to the cemetery.
