Charles 'Butch' Surber

Charles Rodney Surber (better known as Butch), 77 passed away at JMH on October 17, 2025. He was preceded in death by his son Scott Bradley Surber; his parents, Garland and Kathleen Surber; his father and mother in law, Tivis and Ruth Smith; brothers-in-law, Melvin Chapman, Howard Smith, and David Smith.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Smith Surber, his granddaughter, Aspen Surber (Sherman Underwood), his great granddaughter, Alaska Underwood, Saltville, VA; his sister, Joyce Chapman (Melvin); sister-in-law Merilyn (Dave) Armstrong, Dublin, VA; brothers-in law-Don (Judy) Smith, Kingsport, TN, Ed (Girt) Smith, Wading River, NY, and Earl (Brenda) Smith, Saltville, VA; sisters-in-law, Donna (Howard) Smith Johnson City, TN and Wanda (David) Smith, Rogersville, TN; His adopted children in love, Lisa and Keith Thomas, Abingdon, VA, Danny Frye and Becky Lowe, Chilhowie, VA.

There are no words that can adequately express our gratitude for all of the love and kindness that has surrounded us as we traveled down a road of life that came upon us way too fast. For now, the only thing we can say is thank you each and every one who are supporting us in our grief.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, 'Upon the Farm' off of Wild Cat Lane (Stillhouse Hollow Rd), Saltville, VA with speaker Don Smith officiating. Everyone is asked to please meet at the cemetery.
