Glade Spring, VA David Alvis Barrett, age 69, passed away Friday, January 1, 2021 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. He was the Executive Director of Appalachian Independence Center in Abingdon, VA. David graduated from R.B. Worthy High School in Saltville where he was known as one of the greatest running backs in Shaker football history and is still talked about by the old time fans. His ferocious defensive linebacker work made him a two-way player throughout his high school career. Recruited by the University of North Carolina after graduation in 1971, Dave became a starting lineman and played in two Sun Bowls and one Gater Bowl for the "Tar Heels". He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Judy Barrett; and brother Don Barrett. Dave is survived by his wife Carol Dorton Barrett; daughter, Keri Jo Barrett; step-children, Chandra Ely, Anna Hudson (Fred), and Lee Hobbs; brothers, Grant Barrett and Jeff Barrett (Debbie); sisters, Susan Wilson and Cheryl Harris; step- grandchildren, Beecher Powers, Chris Hobbs, Carrington Hobbs, Levi Hudson, Joe Hudson, and Marshall Hudson; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA.
