Debra Sue "Susie" Armstrong, age 68, peacefully passed away surrounded by the love of her family on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Smyth County Community Hospital, VA.

Susie, lovingly known as "Nanny" to everyone, was as strong-willed as she was kind-hearted. Though she could be stubborn at times, she was rarely seen without a smile on her face. She retired after 30 years of dedicated service at RVES, where she loved every child who walked through the doors. To generations of students, she was affectionately known as "the ice cream lady." Her warmth, laughter, and loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Al and Vernie Musser, and her infant daughter, April Renee Armstrong.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 54 years, Jerl Armstrong; son, Ryan Armstrong; daughter, Tracy Lomans (Mike); granddaughter who was like a daughter, Katie Armstrong (Mike); grandchildren, Adam Armstrong, Autumn Lomans, Hagan Van Deest, Lucas Van Deest, Colton Van Deest, Byers Van Deest, and Sidne Kammler; her wish come true—to meet and spend 2.5 months with her great-granddaughter, Cove Gibbs; several nieces and nephews; and a host of many other close family and friends.

In keeping with Susie's wishes, there will be no public services.
