Obituary

Debra "Debbie" Ward DeBord passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones as she ended her battle with pancreatic cancer on July 17th, 2022. Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred Ward and Elizabeth Hodge Osborne of Saltville, Va.; and grandparents Howard and Willie Esther Ward and Bill and Katie Hodge, of Saltville, Va.; Father and mother-in-law, Bill and Stella DeBord of Saltville; four brothers-in-law, William "Babo" DeBord and Eddie DeBord, both of Saltville, Ernie Johnson and Eddie Hahn, also of Saltville, and two sisters-in-law, Vickie Stacy of Piney Flats, Tennessee and Betty "Jackie" Nutter of Blountville, Tennessee. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Michael E. DeBord; her two children Rebecca DeBord Holmes and husband Scott, and Daniel DeBord and wife Adrienne; four wonderful grandchildren, Abby and Jack Holmes and Olivia and Anna DeBord and special addition Austin Holloway; her sister Tamela Hahn and brother Alfred "Tiger" Ward, Jr. and wife Barbara; brothers and sisters-in-law Pam DeBord, Janice DeBord, Darrell DeBord and wife Mary Ellen, Martha Haynes and husband Larry, Richard Nutter, and Terry "Todd" Stacy along with several cousins, nieces and nephews, including special niece, Cindy Mutter. She is also survived by her aunt Margaret King and husband Bob and uncle Shirley Hodge, along with several special friends including Betsy Fritz and Louise Marshall. Debbie dedicated her years to caring for her family and loved ones, which included many co-workers who were like family to her over her 45 years of employment at Smyth County Department of Social Services. As a member of the Madam Russell United Methodist Church, Debbie spent her youth as a Sunday School and Children's Church leader. Her later years were spent caring for others through not only cooking, but also teaching others to love the art. Taking care of her "herd" until the end, Debbie faced her short battle with cancer through the strength of her faith, never expressing fear or reservation about the path that lie before her. Debbie greeted each day with a smile and a giggle, never losing her sense of humor or her unwavering positivity; showing us all how to face a challenge with grace. Though cancer may have taken her from us, it did not defeat her. Services of Remembrance will be held at McCready United Methodist Church in Saltville on Wednesday, July 20th, with visitors being received from 12:00-2:00 PM and services to follow. Debbie requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Those wishing to express sympathy online may do so by visiting www.drhendersonfuneralhome.com and signing the online guest book. The D.R. Henderson Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of Debra "Debbie" Ward DeBord.
