Obituary

Dennis Wade "Popa" Phipps

Glade Spring, VA

Wade Phipps, age 79, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully one week after the loss of his beloved wife of 62 years, Linda. Wade's life was defined by his love for Linda, whom he cherished above all else. He dedicated 37 years of service to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), where he worked as the Maintenance Operation Manager in the Abingdon Residency until his retirement. Wade was a respected colleague and friend to many, always giving his best to the community he served. He was a longtime member of Grace Presbyterian Church. Wade found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing with friends, but nothing brought him more happiness than casting a line with his son, "Bo." Many Saturdays were spent with his tailgate friends at Emory and Henry College during football season. Above all, his family was his world especially his grandchildren they were his pride and joy. As "Popa," he was a constant source of love and support, following their sports and being their biggest fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Buckeye" and Kathleen "Kat" Phipps; the love of his life, Linda Haynes Phipps; and two sisters, Teresa Doane and Gery Knight.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Phillip "Bo" Phipps and wife Lisa of Abingdon, VA, Sam Phipps and fiancé Tammy of Dispuntante, VA; sister, Peggy Hess of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Hunter Phipps of Charlotte, NC, and Jacob Phipps and fiancé Danielle of Marion, VA; Misty Phipps, the mother of his grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Peco Norris, Doug Fullen, and Roy Baldwin; special neighbors, Derek and Nichole Razor and family, and Greg Hayes and family; and special pet, Itsy.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024 with Pastor Darlene Litton and Pastor David Robbins officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Mount Rose Cemetery.
