Dexter Prater age 73, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va.

Dexter was born December 17, 1952 to the late James and Kathleen Prater and was the 5th child of 8 children raised in the "River Hills".

Including his parents, Dexter was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Dakota Grace Hoover; two brothers, Raven and Alton Prater; three brothers-in-law, James Cook, David and Andrew Hoover.

Those left to cherish his memory is the love of his life, his wife of 38 years, Glenna Hoover Prater; daughter, Pam Mills; sons, James Hoover and wife Nancy, Dexter Prater, Jr., Scott Hoover, Nathan Prater, Alan Prater and wife Christina, Wesley Hoover, Josh Hoover and wife Brittany; grandchildren, Dustin Hoover and fiancé Haley Hall, Cory Jollie, Lily Lynam and husband Rob, Dalton Hoover and significant other Sophia Compton, Gracie Little and husband Ethan, David Prater, Lacie Prater, Destiny Hoover, Bryson Hoover, Kylee Hoover, Marcus and Isaiah Arnold, Toby Harless, and Caleb Anderson; great grandson, Blake Hoover; brothers, James Prater and wife Nancy, Lester Prater and wife Deloris and Ricky Prater; sisters Juanita Cook, Glenda Hart and husband Keith; brother-in-law, Jerry Hoover; sisters-in-law, Brenda and Carol Hoover; special nephews, James, Thomas, and Robert Prater; special nieces, Tina Hogston and husband Mike and Marina, Angel Petrosky and husband David; special friends Carlton Chapman, Lacy Frye, Nancy and J.D. Cregger, Tammy Booth, Christy Keyes, and Ann Heninger; his very special "furry friends", Diesel, Squeak, Dixie, Spunky, Girlie, and Floppy.

Funeral services for Dexter Andrew Prater, Sr. will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026 at Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Roger O'Quinn, Pastor Leonard Smith, and Minister Conway Hutton officiating.  Burial will follow at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Those serving as pallbearers will be Cory Jollie, Dustin Hoover, Dalton Hoover, David Prater, James Hoover, and Alan Prater.  Honorary pallbearers will be Carlton Chapman, Lacy Frye, and Denny Mitchell.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care they provided for their loved one.
