Elizabeth Lorene Wilson

Saltville, Va.

Elizabeth Lorene Wilson, age 93, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Valley Nursing and Rehab in Chilhowie, Va. Lorene graduated from Saltville High School in 1947. She began working for Mr. J. Leonard Mauck, the superintendent of the Saltville schools. Mr. Mauck encouraged Lorene to attend college. She followed his advice and began attending Radford College in Radford, Virginia in 1948. After college, she began teaching 1st grade at the McCready's Gap School. She was nineteen years old at this time. She taught there for one year. Lorene married Walter Virgil Wilson on June 10, 1949. They moved to Indiana and lived there for about a year. They later returned to Saltville and Lorene began teaching 3rd grade and 4th grades. Her class was large with forty-nine students, but she accepted the challenge. Besides teaching at McCready's Gap School, she also taught at several other local schools including the Buckeye Hollow School where she taught 1st and 2nd grades until it later closed. She was a lifetime member of Buckeye Hollow Free Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was also a Sunday School Teacher for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bram and Mamie Hunt; her husband, Walter Wilson; two sisters, Josephine Nunley and Billie Roark; three brothers, Melvin, Glenn, and Lincoln Hunt; and special uncle, Sam Hunt; she is also survived by many students that she considered as her own children throughout the years.

She is survived by her sister, Connie Martin and husband David; brother, Ted Hunt; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Eddie Wilson; sisters-in-law, Betty Booher and husband Ronnie, Louise Pierce and husband Glen special friends, Jerry Olinger, and Brenda Blakely "Salt Mountain Girl".

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023, at Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Wade Kestner and Rev. Allen Hunt officiating. The burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery in Abingdon, Va. The family will be receiving friends from 12 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.
