Emmett "Jay" Alvin Griffin, Jr., age 75, passed away at Johnston Memorial Hospital on Friday, September 8, 2023 after a lengthy illness. He was born in 1948 in Martin County, North Carolina. He was known as "Jay" to most, but some family referred to him as "Big Jay", and "Papa Jay." He was a dedicated and honorable Air Force veteran who served our nation with unwavering commitment for 24 years, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Jay served in Vietnam and during his time in the service he also had the honor of traveling to countries like Germany, Australia, and Japan. Outside of his military career, Jay was known for his passion for golf. He spent countless hours on the golf course, enjoying the sport he loved. He was also a lifelong loyal fan of the UVA Wahoo's.
Jay is now reunited with his parents, Emmet Alvin Griffin, Sr, and Mamie and Lester Shumaker; his son, Jon Kevin Griffin; and his special dog, Mattie.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 51 years of marriage, Marti Sykes Griffin of Saltville, VA; his son, Jayson Griffin and wife Courtney of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Brier, Tyler, Jackson, and Aubrey Griffin; special friend, Betty Pennington; family in the Hampton Newport News area; his Saltville family; and numerous other friends who were like family to him.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital and also the Hospice care team, for all of their love and care during this difficult time.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Dunn officiating. There will be military rites rendered by the United States Airforce and V.F.W. Post #4667. The family will be receiving friends from 12 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.
