Obituary

Fred Logan Somervell

Age 82, of Rich Valley, went home to be with the Lord on September 7, 2025. He was born on December 7, 1942, in Pulaski County, Virginia, to the late Paul and Lucille Stevenson Somervell.

Fred was a loving man with a heart of gold who touched many lives as a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather, brother, neighbor, and friend to many. He worked hard all of his life and especially loved being outdoors. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, cutting firewood, and tending his garden. He took joy in sharing its harvest—whether through meals, canned goods, or simply opening his home to others.

A true farmer at heart and a skilled stone mason by trade, Fred built his life on hard work and generosity. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a faithful member of Rich Valley Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Rich Valley High School in 1960.

Above all, Fred deeply loved his family and treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were his greatest joy. His kindness, strong work ethic, and giving spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lillian Somervell Wilson; and three brothers, David Lee Roy Somervell, William Roger Somervell, and Paul Alexander Somervell.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years of marriage, Lillian Jean Stevens Somervell; his five sons, James Arthur Somervell and wife Alice, Jason Roger Somervell and wife Amy, John Alfred Somervell and wife Dee Dee, Jacob Paul Somervell and wife Cyndy, Fred Logan Somervell, ll, and wife Pam; sister, Alexine Burgess; and brother, Sidney Allen Somervell; twenty-two grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Rich Valley Presbyterian Church with Pastor Mike Klumpp officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the service. The burial will follow at the Rich Valley Presbyterian Church cemetery.
