G. Randall Smith, age 88, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026. He was born on June 17, 1938.

Randall was a proud graduate of Saltville High School, Class of 1956, and later continued his education at Virginia Highlands Community College. He dedicated more than 30 years of service to Westinghouse before retiring and beginning what he often considered the greatest adventure of his life.

Alongside his beloved wife, Sue, Randall spent his retirement traveling the world, making memories, and embracing every opportunity to explore. Yet, no matter how far his travels took him, his heart always remained in Saltville and in service to his community.

Volunteerism became Randall’s true passion. He organized and participated in hundreds of food drives and was a familiar sight throughout Saltville in his beloved red pickup truck, affectionately known as “Old Faithful,” delivering food to neighbors in need. His commitment to serving others touched countless lives and reflected the generosity that defined him.

Randall proudly served as a member of the Saltville Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Saltville Beagle Club, the Saltville-Rich Valley Lions Club, and the Norton Lions Club. Through the Lions Club, he served as a Past State Governor, dedicating years of leadership and service to helping others. In recognition of his unwavering commitment to his community, Randall was also honored as a Kentucky Colonel.

While his community service brought him great pride, nothing compared to the love he had for his family. Becoming a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather brought him some of his greatest blessings, but “Grandaddy” was the title he cherished most. He never missed an opportunity to support his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or great-great-grandchild, faithfully attending their sporting events, school activities, and special occasions. Whether cheering the loudest from the stands or capturing every memorable moment with his camera, Randall made sure his family always knew they were loved and supported.

Randall’s warm smile, outgoing personality, and genuine kindness meant he never met a stranger. He had a remarkable sense of adventure and often joked that he was never truly lost, only discovering somewhere new. Those spontaneous detours frequently led to unforgettable experiences, though they sometimes proved impossible to find again. That spirit of curiosity and adventure ensured there was always something new to see, somewhere new to go, and another story waiting to be told.

Randall leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family and community. His life serves as a reminder that the greatest impact we can make is found not in what we accomplish for ourselves, but in how we serve and love others. His kindness, servant’s heart, and adventurous spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched and in the family who meant everything to him.

Randall was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 55 years, Sue Smith; his daughter, Deb Smith Marshall; and his sister, Peggy Collins.

He is survived by his son, Randy Smith and wife, Sonja; his sister, Denice Davenport; and his special son-in-law, Clay Marshall. He also leaves behind the grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy: Chip Marshall and wife, Courtney; Tim Marshall and wife, Wendy; Landon Smith and wife, Carol; Gina Sullivan and husband, Michael; Jacob Smith and wife, Kellie; and Rachel Smith. His legacy continues through his cherished great-grandchildren: Ainsley, Pippin, Lucy, Corbin and wife, Hannah; Gavin and wife, Erin; Reese, Kate, Emmi, Kaydynn, Jordyn, Jaxon, Bexley, and Ashley; as well as his treasured great-great-granddaughter, Kennedy.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will begin at 7:00 p.m. with Preacher Cody Trivett officiating.
