Jack Dean
Smith
Sep 21, 1935 — Dec 3, 2022
Abingdon, Va.
Jack Dean Smith passed away on December 3, 2022 at Commonwealth Senior Living in Abingdon, VA surrounded by his loved ones. He was 87 years old.
A native of Saltville, VA, Jack was born in Henrytown on September 21, 1935. He graduated from Saltville High School and did his patriotic duty in the U.S. Air Force serving in Oklahoma, Texas, Guam, and Okinawa. After his military service, Jack attended the National Business College in Roanoke. Va. Upon receiving his degree he worked for a distribution company visiting retail locations along the eastern seaboard from VA to Maine. In 1960 he settled in the Norfolk, VA area to work for Boyce Lumber Company where he rose from office manager to CFO and became co-owner and vice-president of Shirley Construction Company. After retiring in 1997, Jack spent his days enjoying his favorite pastimes working the daily crossword and word scramble, watching sports, visiting his favorite watering hole, and watching the financial reports. With a head for business, he remained successful in retirement and was generous to churches and various organizations. He remained tied to Saltville (or as he put it "going back to the mountains") and donated to several Saltville organizations including the food bank, the fire department, the rescue squad, the police department, the library, local churches, the Museum of the Middle Appalachians, and the Southwest Virginia Community Health System. In honor of his father, he provided funding to the Calvary Bible Church for improvements to the building (the former Henrytown Methodist Church which his father helped Carl Harris and neighbors to build), the construction of a new fellowship hall, and the purchase of a church bus. Jack was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years and a staunch supporter of the VFW for many years.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Garnett F. Smith and Hazel Price Smith, and siblings, Marie (Smith) Oakes, Garnett Wayne Smith, Tommy "Sorearm" Smith, and Nancy (Smith) Repass. A lifelong bachelor, Jack is survived by his siblings- Sylvester Smith of GA and Ronald Smith of TX, several nieces and nephews, as well as special friends Rocky and Esther Smith of Chesapeake, VA. Special thanks to his nephew, Mike Smith, who was Jack's primary caregiver over the last few years.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Barry Loupe officiating. Jack will be buried in Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. Pallbearers will be Tony Smith, Mike Smith, Anthony Smith, Jeff Campbell.
