Obituary

Saltville, Virginia

Katherine Lynn "Kate" Niles Grogg went home to the Lord on October 15, 2025, peacefully surrounded by family following an extended illness.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Kate will be deeply missed. Born to the late Kenneth O. and Helen J. Niles on August 17, 1956, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Kate graduated from Granby High School in Norfolk, VA, in 1975 and married the love of her life, Jimmy Grogg, on September 20, 1975. Together, they raised three children, taught hundreds of Sunday school classes, blessed a thousand souls with their music ministries, and taught countless neighborhood kids and family members about the love of God. Kate was always active in church and Bible studies; she enjoyed entertaining family and friends and loved decorating her home and filling it with festive joy for every season. She was a lover of animals and never left any dog, cat, bird, or deer in need of food, shelter, love, or care. Kate was the embodiment of the love of Christ, the mission of the gospel, and the most powerful prayer warrior.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her stepmother, Norma Niles; siblings, Terry Owens, Carol Banwell, and Kenneth J. Niles; grandchildren, Cameron Murray and Jaliyah Grogg; sister-in-law, Margaret Niles; and nephew, Kevin Keesing.

Kate is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Jimmy Grogg; her son, James Grogg II, and his wife, Jamalia; her daughters, Kimberly Grogg and Susanne Nixon; her grandchildren, Jennifer Traina and her husband, Thomas Douglas Grogg, Monica Croxton, Alex Grogg, Jamar Dover, Katlyn Bergman and her husband, Nicolas, Keirsten Murray, and Charles Nixon Jr.; great-grandchildren, Mila Cobb and Josephine Traina; siblings, Charles Niles, Marylynne Baeseman, and William Shaw and his wife, Judy; numerous nieces, nephews, bonus children, extended family, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Freedom Baptist Church, 32503 Poor Valley Road, Saltville, VA with Pastor Barry Loupe officiating. An additional ceremony will be held at First Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA, at a later date.
