Katie Sue Lester Hyman

Katie Sue Lester Hyman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on March 1, 2024, at the age of 84. She was born on November 26, 1939, in Saltville to Howard and Almeda Davidson Lester. She started school in Buckeye and then moved to Glade Spring, where she graduated Glade Spring High School in 1957.

Katie was known by many as an avid quilter who worked with professional level craftsmanship. For several years she quilted with a group of ladies at the Church of the Nazarene, and then later joined up with the Busy Bee Quilters at Broadford as well as a smaller group in Glade Spring. With these ladies she spent many hours in friendship and enjoyment of their craft. They became like family to her.

Above all else, Katie cherished her family and devoted herself entirely to them. She was the consummate homemaker and as her children began preparing for college, she returned to work in several local sewing factories as a trainer and an inspector for Buster Brown, Harwood, and Natalie.

In addition to her parents, Katie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom Hyman Sr.; her son, Tommy Hyman; her brother, James "Bubby" Lester; her sisters-in-law, Anna Lester, Attie Talbert, Ruth Woodward, Bea Allison, and Wanda Lester; and brothers-in-law, Buddy Hyman, Cleveland Woodward, and Sam Talbert.

Katie is survived by her daughters Tina Surber and husband Randy, Eleanor Desai, grandchildren Katie and husband Bobby, Amy, Patrick, Samantha & Alex, great-grandchild Madelyn and beloved brother Bill Lester, and a host of relatives and friends who will miss her dearly. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the warmth of the love she so freely gave.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Henderson Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends from 12 until 2 p.m. prior to the service. The burial will follow at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA.
