Obituary

Clinchburg, Va.

Kenneth David "Kenny" Athey, age 86, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Valley Nursing and Rehab in Chilhowie, Va.  Kenny was born September 10, 1938, to the late Garnett and Annie Athey in Clinchburg, Va. where he lived most of his life.  Kenny was a self-taught guitarist and enjoyed playing music.  He loved working with his wife in their yard whether it was taking care of their flowers, or planting and raising a garden.  He enjoyed sitting on the porch and would sit there until late during the summer months.  Kenny was a very active and dedicated member to Little Rock Baptist Church for many years.  He always attended every service, Sunday morning service, Wednesday night service or revival.  Kenny worked at Holston Furniture in Glade Spring for Mr. John Wright.  He also worked at Brown's Furniture, The Pit Stop in Glade Spring and Duncan's in Saltville.  He was always an asset no matter where he worked, and all the customers loved him.

Including his parents, he was preceded by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara Overbay Athey; and an infant son, Gary Lee Athey.

Left to cherish and honor his memory is his son David Athey and wife Robbie of Marion, Va.; and one sister, Jody Prater and husband Robert of Saltville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Kenneth David Athey will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2025, at Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville, Va. with Pastor Doug Haga officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. prior to the service.  A committal service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, Va.  Those serving as pallbearers will be Craig Young, Allan Long, Chris Little, Preston Pionk, Joshua Smith, and Brian Murchison.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the entire staff at Valley Health Care from the business office to the nursing staff for the wonderful care for Kenny.
