Obituary

Saltville, Virginia

Lois Evelyn Snodgrass Shupe, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Lois was a kind and loving woman whose greatest joy came from the simple things in life and the people she shared them with. Family was always at the center of her life, and she especially treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren. Lois appreciated the moments that brought the people she loved together. She was a long term and active member of the Hayters Gap Senior Citizens. Over the years, she formed many special friendships there and proudly served as president. Lois loved music and enjoyed singing both at church and with her Senior Citizens family. She also played the autoharp, and music remained something that brought her happiness throughout her life. She loved to read and particularly enjoyed trips to the library with her sister, Norma. She could often be found working on a jigsaw puzzle or birdwatching. Lois had an impressive ability to identify any bird. She was also wonderfully talented with her hands. In her younger years, Lois made beautiful quilts by hand and also knitted. She was well known for making what they considered the very best knitted dishcloths. She will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dean Shupe; parents, Melvin Carter and Virgie Nipper Snodgrass; sister, Geneva Snodgrass Mitchell; sister-in-law, Phyllis Snodgrass; and brothers-in-law, Troy Taylor and Hampton Mitchell.

Lois is survived by her son, Dan Shupe and wife, Sandra; daughter, Dianne Buchanan and husband, Gary of Saltville, VA; sisters, Norma Taylor, Donna Rickman and husband, Oaksey, and Kim Hill and husband, Glenn, all of Saltville, VA; brother, Kenny Snodgrass of Saltville, VA; grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, Jessica Buchanan and husband, Jacob Downs of Bristol, VA, and Jonathan Buchanan of Virginia Beach, VA; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving family members and friends, including her church family and Hayters Gap Senior Citizens family.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at the Snodgrass Family Cemetery, 28422 North Fork River Road, Saltville, VA, with Pastor Roger Oquinn officiating.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jonathan Buchanan, Jacob Downs, Glenn Hill, Mike Allison, Paul Taylor, and Gary Louthian. Ricky Allison and Jimmy Snodgrass will serve as honorary pallbearers.
