Lieutenant Lamuel Scott Prater of the Smyth County Sheriff's office passed away after a long battle with cancer surrounded by his family and friends on May 24th, 2024. He had a prestigious 29-year career in law enforcement serving his community in various roles. Scott was a beloved coach at Chilhowie High School, and he loved to play golf, hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gentry and Georgia Cardwell, and Lamuel and Mary Prater.

Scott is survived by his wife, Angela Prater; his two daughters, Jordan (fiancé Scott Gullion), and Madison Prater; his parents, Lamuel "Eddie" and Jean Prater; sisters, Cynthia Owens, and Jennifer "Mikki" Keyser and husband Ryan Keyser; sister-in-law, Teresa and husband David Rose, brother-in-law, Eugene Barker; nieces, Lesley Brogan and husband Albert, Jessica Rose, Michele Barker and; nephews, Jonathan Rose, and Gary Wayne Owens; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and brothers and sisters in blue; and his dog "Willow".

The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Davis and his staff at the Abingdon Cancer Center and Dr. Clampitt and his staff at Family Physicians of Marion.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Chilhowie Christian Church with Preacher Wes Eller officiating. Burial will follow at the Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville, Va. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Chilhowie Christian Church. Pallbearers will be Johnny Joannou, Billy Keene, Chris Hazelwood, Billy Eller, Landon Smith, Ryan Keyser, and Randy Surber. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Alexander and Gerecht Keyser, and great nephews, Wyatt Owens, Byron Rose, Russell and Theodore Brogan.
