Mendie Darlene Hughes, age 68, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents. Paul and Virgie Davidson Surber; her brother, Ronald "Duck" Surber; and her sister, Frances "Cookie" Hopkins. Mendie worked as a CNA for Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, Va. for 23 years.

Mendie is survived by her husband of 50 years, Coy Hughes; her daughter, Shawn Galliher and husband Will of Abingdon, Va.; and her son, Christopher S. Hughes and wife Mindie of Saltville, Va.; grandchildren, Skyler Hughes, and Baylee Smith; brother's, Curtis Surber and wife Sally of Marion, Va., and Wayne Surber of Saltville; sister's, Linda Shuler of Marion, Va., and Mavis Harris and husband Dexter of Marion, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
