Obituary

Saltville, Va.

Nellie Lorene Johnson Montgomery Born April 1st, 1930, to her loving parents William and Belle Johnson passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday April 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Nellie was preceded in death by the man who stole her heart, her one and only true love, best friend, her partner in life and now eternity, husband William Robert Montgomery (Bill), her father and mother William and Belle Johnson, her sister Sue Collins, and her first Grandson Gregory Allen Stanley.

Nellie is survived by her daughter Ann Stanley and her son in law Sherman Stanley, her grandchildren Kevin Stanley wife Heather, Caryn Stanley Gates, Tracey Stanley her great grandchildren Canaan Stanley (fiancé Sadie), Megan Brown (husband William), Job Stanley (fiancé Grace) Tyler Stanley (wife Haley), Elijah Stanley, Thatcher Stanley (Hannah), Olivia Gates (fiancé Christian), Brayden Gates and Reid Stanley. Great great grandchildren Nellie Stanley, Sutton Stanley, and Ava Brown. Nellie is also survived by her two brothers that she loved unendingly Wilbur Johnson and Huey Johnson; and a special family friend, Jeff Smith.

Nellie was referred to by many different names, Nell, Lorene, Mommy, Friend, Neighbor but the name she loved most and was most proud to be called was Mamaw. Mamaw loved and adored her grandchildren, and she was loved and adored by them all as well. There is one word that comes to mind and best describes Mamaw, and that word is selflessness. She cared so much for others and always put others needs in front of her own. Philippians 2:3-4 best describes Mamaw as she lived out this passage "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." Though she will be terribly missed here in this world by all of us, in her final gift of selflessness Mamaw left the greatest gift of all to all her family members and that gift was and is the surety that she this very day is alive and well and celebrating the greatest reunion that one could ever imagine.

Visitation will be held on Thursday May 1st from 5 to 7pm at Allisons Gap First Church of God followed by a celebration of life service. The service will be officiated by Pastor Jeremy Dunn, Pastor Bobby Dunn, her Grandson Kevin Stanley as well as all her Great Grandchildren. Internment will take place on Friday May 2nd at 11am at the Johnson family cemetery at 32008 Poor Valley Road Saltville Virginia. Pall bearers will be great grandsons Canaan Stanley, Job Stanley, Tyler Stanley, Elijah Stanley, Thatcher Stanley, Reid Stanley, William Brown and Christian Gonzalez. Mamaw heard the words that she lived her life to hear today, and those words were clearly and loudly spoken, "Well done, my good and faithful servant".
