Saltville, VA Norma Lee Frye Shew, age 71, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lilburn and Virginia C. Frye; one daughter, Charity Diane; and sister, Peggy Jo Frye. Norma was an amazing human being that did much and succeeded at most. She was a native of Saltville, and after living in many places, settled in in her dream home in Allison Gap, just a half mile from where she was born. She was an active, happy person that took any challenge that came her way with confidence and grace. She owned several businesses around the region, and made friends all over the world. Known as " Sweet Norma" around Abingdon, she was an antiques dealer, a minister, an artist and crafter, a wonderful singer, a haunted house actor, and lover of all things beautiful. Norma was a minister in the Anderson First Church of God and believed that God's love could reach anyone. She led the Pounding Mill First Church of God for three years and married many folks around the area. She loved old things and enjoyed buying and selling vintage jewelry to people from everywhere, at Hidden Memories Antiques and Art, in Abingdon. Dressed as a witch in October, you might be led onto a spooky elevator by her at the Nickerson Snead Haunted House. She collected many things and stored them away until someone would be in need, so she could provide that special object; usually for free. Her love and sense of inclusiveness touched thousands of people. Business and strangers were not her true passion, though. The things that were closest to her heart were her friends and family. If you knew her, you were her friend. She adored her family and always wanted the best for them. Never hesitating to give whatever was needed, Norma was only a phone call away. Her relationship with each child was unique and first class, working alongside them in any endeavor where her intelligence and aid was needed. Her husband of 54 years always had her heart. Anyone and any animal were welcomed into her home and was treated like blood, with dignity and respect. Known by her friends as the "Opossum Whisperer", she rehabilitated several wild animals and cared for hundreds of cats through-out her life. After receiving the diagnosis of cancer in 2009, she was cancer free for seven years before it returned. The journey was not over yet, as she continued her battle until God called her home this week. The doctors all knew her strength and will to live. Often called " No Pain Norma", her relationship with God gave her faith and strength, saving her from pain and complications in many procedures, as she made friends from Bristol Regional to the University of Virginia. There was a deep spirituality in her that made her stand out among the crowd. The realm of the spirit has gained a great source of power as we, here on earth, have lost something incredible. She will leave a great void here, that can never be filled, but her actions and love will resonate for generations to come, and she will never be forgotten. She is survived by her husband, Danny Shew; her four children, Ronda Caudill, Dee Dee Holmes, Stephen Shew, and Daniel Shew; two brothers; two sisters; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Neace officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 12 until 2 p.m. prior to the service. The burial will follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
