Obituary

Saltville, Va. / Tampa, Fla. / Marietta, Ga.

Patsy Fields Buchanan, age 85, was peacefully taken by the Lord on Friday, November 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born and raised in Saltville, Virginia, on December 5, 1939, she married the love of her life, Joseph William "Pete" Buchanan, in 1958, and together they began building their family. Tragically, Pete passed away while serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War in 1968, leaving behind their nine-year old daughter and three-year-old son. Despite the unimaginable loss, she became her children's hero. Through strength, faith, and grace, she faced every challenge head-on, raising her children with love and determination as they took on the world together. The family later made their home in Tampa, Florida, where she lived for more than 50 years before moving to Marietta, Georgia, during the final two and a half years of her life. She worked in the real estate business and had a natural gift for connecting with people. Fun, and full of life, she never met a stranger and made friends wherever she went. Her greatest joy came from being a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, cousin, grandmother, and friend. She was a shining example of kindness, resilience, and unconditional love. A long-time member of Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida, her faith was central to her life and guided her every step. She taught Sunday School for many years to young children at Idlewind and influenced the blossoming faith of hundreds. Today, Heaven has gained its newest "gate greeter," surely welcoming others home with her everlasting gregarious spirit.

In addition to her husband, Patsy was preceded in death by her father, Leo Hughes Fields; mother, Mary Louise Fields; and brother, Jerry Douglas Fields.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Mark Alan Buchanan (Gretchen) of Marietta Georgia; daughter, Deborah L. Buchanan of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Joshua Winston Buchanan and Timothy Ray Buchanan; and a host of many loving friends and family.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 11: 00 a.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3125 Sewell Mill Road, Marietta Georgia 30062 with Rev. Hubie Mann officiating.

A graveside service to celebrate Patsy will be held at a later date at Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville, Virginia.
