Peggy Jane
Lawson Mccready
Feb 19, 1933 — Apr 18, 2026
Abingdon
Abingdon, Virginia
Peggy Jane Lawson McCready, age 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Peggy was a devoted Christian woman whose life was firmly rooted in her faith. She first attended First Christian Church and later became a faithful member of Washington Springs Methodist Church, where she lovingly served as the church pianist and organist for many years. Through her music and quiet devotion, she was a blessing to her church family and all who knew her. Peggy met the love of her life while at work, and together they built a wonderful life on the family farm. She was no stranger to hard work and could often be found riding the tobacco setter, keeping a watchful eye on the boys and quickly reminding them, "That's it," whenever they got into mischief, especially when they were off throwing rocks at the "ole corn mill." Peggy was the heart of the home and known for preserving the harvest by canning just about everything imaginable, including hog meat and sausage. She was especially famous for making the world's best apple butter, something made even better when paired with her and Morgan's homemade apple cider. When her work on the farm was done, Peggy found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially sewing and spending time with her word search books. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morgan Arnold McCready; parents, Robert and Florence Lawson; brothers, Bobby, Jimmy, and Bill Lawson; sisters, Eleanor Taylor and Dorothy "Dottie" Thomas.
Peggy is survived by her sons, Steve McCready and wife, Sandra, Bill McCready, and Joe McCready and wife, Jodi; grandchildren, Aaron McCready, Amber Joines, Adam McCready, Morgan McCready, and Adam Parsons; great-grandchildren, Kira Joines, Kennedy Joines, William and Nicolas Stefanescu; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Mount Rose Cemetery, 10069 Crescent Road, Glade Spring, Virginia 24340, with Reverend Larry Lusk officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be her sons and grandchildren.
