Phyllis Jane Helton, age 86, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chilhowie.  Phyllis was born June 6, 1938, in Washington County to the late William Frank and Alice Moore McNew.  She was a caretaker and worked at Southwest State Hospital in Marion for 28 years. Phyllis enjoyed farming alongside her husband, William "Osh" Helton.  She loved to cook and have family gatherings especially at Christmas.  She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.  Phyllis was a godly woman and loved reading her Bible and she attended Mahanaim United Methodist Church.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Osh" Howard Helton; 6 brothers, John, Junior, Earl, Jimmy, Fletcher, and Ernie McNew; one sister, Marie Hinkle; granddaughter, Amanda Doane; and son-in-law, Charlie Doane.

Left to cherish and honor her memory is her son, Greg Helton and wife Donna; daughter, Tammy Doane; 2 granddaughters, Josie Helton and Emily Waugh; and 3 great-grandchildren, Aiden, Liam, and Blake Waugh; brother-in-law, Hansel Helton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Danny and Ellen Roark; niece, Amy Prater; her best friend, Hope Kirby; and her farm dog "Meeko".

A graveside service for Phyllis Helton will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville, Va. with Pastor Mark Baumgardner officiating.  Everyone is asked to gather at the cemetery.
