With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Rachel Frances Nutter of Glade Spring, VA on April 29, 2025 at the age of 90 who was born in Saltville, Va. She was surrounded by her loving nieces, Debi and Brenda by her side during her final moments. Rachel was a member of the Byars-Cobbs Memorial United Methodist Church for over 75 years where she held many offices, taught Sunday School and was a member of the United Women In Faith where she held offices in the church unit and the Abingdon district. Rachel was very active with the church youth and acted as the leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She was a member of Black's Fort NSDAR, Anna Stonewall Jackson-Anne Carter Lee Chapter 180 United Daughters of the Confederacy in Abingdon, VA, Community & Education Club (FCE), the Saltville Lions Club, served as a volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA and volunteered at the Abingdon, VA Public Library. Rachel retired from The Bank of Saltville as Vice President.
Rachel was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, Mary Crabtree Nutter and James Gipson Nutter Sr, sister, Ruth Nutter Bise, brother James Gipson Nutter, Jr and an infant brother. Rachel is survived by two nieces, Debi Nutter Adair (Joe) and Brenda Nutter Peake (Darwin), several great nieces and nephews along with a host of cousins and friends.
The family will be receiving friends and family from 1-3pm on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Byars-Cobbs Memorial United Methodist Church in Glade Spring, VA. The funeral will follow the visitation at 3pm with Pastor Daniel Garrett officiating and burial will follow the service at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. A very special thanks to Caris Healthcare in Abingdon, VA. for their care of Rachel. Pallbearers are Sean Peake, Darwin Peake, Justin Adair, Joe Adair, David Crabtree, and Josh Bise.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Byars-Cobbs Memorial United Methodist Church in Glade Spring, Va.
