Obituary

Reynolds L. "Popeye" Frye

Saltville, VA

Reynolds L. "Popeye" Frye, age 92, went home to be with the Lord on February 3, 2025, at his residence. Born on December 17, 1932, in McCready, VA, he was the son of the late Claude and Stella Blevins Frye. Popeye was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend who lived his life in service to God and others. A reverend with a deep passion for spreading the Word, he dedicated many years to ministry, touching countless lives with his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering faith. His love for the Lord was evident in the way he lived, and even in his later years, he remained faithful, attending church four to five nights a week. A proud patriot, Popeye honorably served his country in both the United States Air Force and the United States Army, where he served as a paratrooper. His dedication and bravery reflected his strong character and commitment to serving others during his time in the military, and from behind the pulpit.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Josephine Sheppard Frye; his brother, Oscar Mathew Frye; and sister, Lois Frye Smith.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Keith Hall and wife Elsa of San Diego California, Jay Frye, Cindy Cregger and husband David, and Eddie Frye and wife Missy, all of Saltville Virginia; grandchildren, James, Andrew, and Sierra Hall all of California, Jake Frye of Virginia Beach, Cody and Jeffrey Cregger of Saltville, Virginia, and Dalton Frye of Chilhowie, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Carson, Canaan, Dallas, Brantlee, Sophia, Stella, and Ronan; two brothers, Jo Boy Frye and Harry Frye;  special brother and sister-in law, Jr. and "Sissy" Reedy; best friend and fishing buddy, Jim Prater; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Reverend R.L. Frye will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at Lighthouse Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Carrico and Pastor Kenneth Poston officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Mount Rose Cemetery where there will be full military rites rendered by the United States Army Honor Guard and the V.F.W. Post #4667.
