Obituary

Abingdon, VA

Robert “Rocky” O’ferrell Cahill, age 76, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2026, at The Waters of Bristol in Bristol, Tennessee.

Rocky was born on February 2, 1950, in Saltville, Virginia, to the late Guy and Maisie Cahill. Rocky was immensely proud of the community that raised him. His love for his hometown was more than something he spoke about—it was something he lived. He cared deeply about the people of Saltville and devoted much of his life to being involved in the community he was so proud to call home. Over the years, Rocky served the Town of Saltville as Mayor, and at the time was the youngest Mayor in the state of Virginia. He also served several years on the Town Council.

A graduate of Emory & Henry College, Rocky earned his bachelor’s degree in English and put his love of words, people, and storytelling to good use throughout a career in journalism. He worked for the Saltville Progress as well as the Smyth County News & Messenger, where he also wrote his own column. Rocky had a natural curiosity about people and the world around him, and he had a gift for turning everyday happenings into stories worth telling.

Anyone who knew Rocky knew that he was a people person through and through. He never seemed to meet a stranger and could strike up a conversation just about anywhere. A jokester with a wonderful sense of humor, Rocky loved making people laugh and was always ready with a story to tell.

Away from his writing and community involvement, Rocky enjoyed photography and had a great appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors. He was a devoted animal lover, with a particularly special place in his heart for his dogs. He also grew up loving and watching baseball and was an avid New York Yankees fan.

Rocky especially loved Christmas and looked forward to the season each year. For him, Christmas meant family, familiar traditions, good stories, laughter, and time spent together. Above everything else in his life, Rocky loved all of his family.

Rocky leaves behind a lifetime of stories, photographs, laughter, and memories, along with a lasting connection to the Saltville community he loved so dearly. He will be remembered as a storyteller, a public servant, a friend to many, and, most importantly, a man who loved his family and his hometown with all his heart.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Stanley “Rusty” Cahill.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 18 years of marriage, Terry Cahill; his daughter, Melissa Compton; and siblings, Ron Cahill and wife Sharon, and Lynn Cahill.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rocky’s memory to the Alzheimer’s association of Tennessee at ALZTennessee.org.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all of the staff at The Waters of Bristol for all of their love and care.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026 at Henderson Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends from 6 until 7 p.m. prior to the service.
