Saltville, Virginia
Sarah Lorraine Mitchell, age 53, started walking down the streets of gold on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
Sarah was a bright and intelligent young lady with a lifelong love for learning. From the time she was a little girl, she had a passion for school and took great pride in her education. She consistently excelled in her studies, taking honors classes and graduating near the top of her class. Her family often joked that if Sarah could have spent her entire life going to school, she happily would have. When Sarah went on to college, she explored several different paths, trying to find the one that suited her best. She pursued studies in both paralegal work and dental assisting. She also worked at Virginia Highlands Airport, where her responsibilities ranged from assisting with aircraft maintenance to performing secretarial duties and just about anything else that needed to be done. She enjoyed staying busy, lending a helping hand wherever she could, and continued working for as long as her health allowed. Above all, Sarah was a devoted Christian whose faith held a special place in her life. She found comfort, strength, and guidance in God's Word, having read the Bible from beginning to end an impressive three times. She attended church whenever her health permitted and was baptized twice. Her faith remained an important part of who she was, providing her with a foundation of hope and comfort through life's many challenges. Sarah also had a tender heart for animals and a special love for all of God's creatures. Whenever she was able, she opened her heart and home to animals in need, caring for several throughout her life, including two beloved parakeets. Children also held a particularly special place in Sarah's heart, and she had a genuine love and affection for them. In her quieter moments, Sarah enjoyed expressing her creativity through arts and crafts. One of the special skills she learned from her family was crocheting rag rugs Sarah will be remembered for her curious mind, her love of learning, her unwavering faith. Though illness eventually limited the things she was able to do, it never diminished the many wonderful qualities that made Sarah who she was. She will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar Mitchell, Jr.; brother, James Robert Mitchell; maternal grandparents, Olivene and James Walker Hunt; paternal grandparents, Sadie and Oscar Mitchell, Sr.
Sarah is survived by her mother, Connie Hunt Trent; and a host of other loving family members and friends.
A visitation and funeral service will be held at a later date at Henderson Funeral home with Pastor Issac Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Valley Road, Saltville, VA 24370.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Hunt, Dale Mitchell, Westley Mitchell, Levi Mitchell, Michael Moore, Christopher Mitchell, and Scott Wallace.
