Thomas Apted Dumper, 90, of Tannersville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home. Born on June 27, 1934, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Thomas lived a life marked by dedication, service, and education. A proud graduate of Florida State University, Thomas earned his Bachelor's degree before serving his country in the United States Army. As a clerk typist stationed in France, he played a vital role in the issuing of supplies, ensuring his fellow servicemen were well-equipped. After his military service, Thomas embarked on a distinguished career with the Soil Conservation Service. His work took him across the United States and Europe, where he applied his expertise in geology and land use planning. His commitment to the field was further evidenced by his pursuit of a PhD from Virginia Tech, where he specialized in Geology and Land Use Planning. After a long and successful career, Thomas moved to Tannersville, Virginia, with his beloved wife to become a farmer. Even in retirement, he remained a hard worker, dedicating his time to various volunteer activities. He served with the Tannersville Rescue Squad and the Saltville Rescue Squad, and continued to contribute to the Soil Conservation Service on numerous projects. Thomas also volunteered at the Museum of the Middle Appalachians and played a role in the Children's Dig in Saltville, Virginia. Above all, Thomas was a faithful Christian. He was an active member of the Broadford First Church of God, where he loved to sing. He was also involved in several community choruses, sharing his love of music with many. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 64 years, Anne Newton Dumper of Tannersville, VA; his son, Tom Dumper and wife Charean Williams of Arlington, TX; his daughter, Maggie Sykes and husband Steve of Troy, OH; and his two granddaughters, Megan Myers, and BethAnne Myers.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Broadford First Church of God, 4102 Bluegrass Trail, Saltville, Va. 24370 and also the Museum of the Middle Appalachians, 123 Palmer Avenue, Saltville, Va. 24370.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Crabtree Cemetery in Tannersville. Everyone is asked to please meet at the cemetery.
