Obituary

Saltville, Va.

Timothy Paul Johnson, 49, passed away at his home on June 23, 2024, surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Edith and Frank Doyle; paternal grandparents, Opal and Paul Johnson; aunts and uncles, Carol and T. W. Burkett, Ike and Tina Doyle, and Doris and Jim Doyle.

He is survived by his parents, Rita and Neil Johnson; brother, Steve; and cousins, Tom, DeeDee, Lynn, Karen, Valerie, Jamie, and Johnny.

Tim was a graduate of Thomas Walker High School and Tusculum University. While attending Thomas Walker, he excelled in his athletic pursuits by being an all-state in football and golf and scoring over 1200 points in basketball. While attending Tusculum, he was a member of the golf team that played in the national tournament. After graduating from college, Tim started his teaching and coaching career at Abingdon High School and subsequently taught and coached at Patrick Henry, Thomas Walker, Lee, George Wythe, and Northwood High Schools. While coaching was his calling, he had an equal passion for his students. They were very special to him and was just as proud of them in their life's endeavors as he was of the players he coached. He also had a love for golf. Although he hadn't played much the last couple of years, his television was seemingly always on the golf channel and there wasn't a bigger fan of Tiger Woods anywhere. His brother Steve is a Clemson graduate, so he became a die-hard Tiger too and he loved watching and attending their games.

The family would like to thank all of Tim's special friends who have reached out. It brings us comfort to know how much he was loved and will be missed.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at the Northwood High School Auditorium.
