Saltville, Va.

Waymon Clifton Aker, of Saltville, Viriginia, passed away Saturday evening, July 27, 2024, at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee, at the age of eighty-three years and seventeen days of age. Waymon was born July 10, 1941, to the late Sherrill Clifton Aker and Cornelia Angeline Hess Aker of the Bear Creek Community. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his late wife, Janice Loraine Davidson Aker, and one brother, Avery Herman 'Conductor' Aker. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John Waymon Philip Aker and Laura Sarena Williams Aker, and his maternal grandparents, Herman Burk Hess and Martha Jane Havens Hess.

From his youth, Waymon was a hardworking man. He worked for McFarlane's Logging Company, Visador Company, Junior Hayden Excavation and Cuddy Excavation. He was an expert heavy equipment operator—using his skill to help many people over the years. After his retirement, he was a handy man that enjoyed working in his woodshed, as well as working on lawnmowers, chainsaws and weed eaters for his neighbors and friends.

Wayman gave his heart to the Lord in 1991 and became a faithful member of the Buckeye Hollow Free Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was always eager and ready for church, arriving thirty to forty-five minutes early. He willingly worked excavating the property for the new church facilities and did it with joy. You would always find him and Janice at the Fall Festival selling baked goods to help pay for the new church.

Waymon is survived by one son, Teddy Aker, one grandson, Andrew Aker and one great-grandson, Dominic Isaiah Aker. One brother, Glenn William Aker (Patricia) of South Carolina; and one sister-in-law, Rita Aker Thompson of Adwolf, Virginia. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends and associates.

Special thanks to Courtney, Tony and Heather, and the caring staff at Francis Marion Manor, as well as his nephew, Donnie Aker of Rural Retreat—all who have given him excellent care for the past few years. Also special thanks to his nephew, Jerry Olinger, and niece, Lisa Holmes, both of Saltville, who have been there for Waymon for many years.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Cuddy, and Pastor Wade Kestner officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service. A committal service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, Va. Those serving as pallbearers will be Donnie Aker, Mike Aker, Richard Aker, Gary (George) Olinger, Adam Holmes, and Cody Holmes.
