William "Butch" McCoy Hatfield, Jr., age 68, of Chilhowie, Virginia, peacefully completed his earthly journey on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.

Born on December 29, 1957, in Saltville, Virginia, Butch was the son of the late William McCoy Hatfield and Barbara Lewis Hatfield.

Butch attended R.B. Worthy High School before furthering his education at Virginia Highlands Community College. He dedicated more than 20 years of service to Klockner Pentaplast, where he worked as a supervisor. Known for his strong work ethic, dependability, and leadership, Butch took great pride in giving his best in everything he did.

To know Butch was to know a man who never met a stranger. He had a remarkable gift for making friends wherever he went and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Whether he was sharing one of his many stories, stopping by to visit with friends and neighbors, or finding a way to make someone laugh, Butch had a personality that naturally drew people to him. His smile, sense of humor, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

When illness entered his life, Butch faced every challenge with courage. He fought with everything he had, never giving up. Most importantly, he found peace by accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, leaning on his faith through every step of his journey. His family finds comfort in knowing that his earthly struggles are over and that he is now whole and at peace in the presence of his Savior.

He will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his compassionate heart, his unforgettable stories, and the laughter he so freely shared with others. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Rufus Garnett “RG” Hatfield and David Hatfield.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 46 years of marriage, Darlene Hatfield; his son, Will Hatfield and fiancé Kara Queen of Rural Retreat, VA; his brother, Rick Hatfield and wife Teresa Fullen of Saltville, VA; his sisters, Sue Martin of Oakridge, TN, and Norma Arnold of Saltville, VA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; he also leaves behind his special Fur-Baby, his cat “Petey.”

Following his wishes there will be no services.
