Saltville, Va. Bill "Jock" Lee, 95, went to be with The Lord on August 24, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 21, 1926 and lived a long, full, and happy life. He was the son of Margaret Routh and Wyndham Lee. Bill was employed by Olin Mathieson, VDOT and W & L. His lifelong love of sports started with playing football at Saltville High School, and continued as he coached his Little League football team; The Allison Gap Blue Devils and Pony League baseball. His coaching influenced a great number of players in the Saltville area. He was a 1997 member of VHSL Hall of Fame for refereeing a record number of high school football, basketball, and baseball games over a 43-year span. He was also inducted into the Smyth County Hall of Fame. He was a true Saltville Shaker and loved his town (which he called Shaker Town) and all fellow Saltvillians. He was preceded in death by his beloved and oldest son, William "Billy" Lee, Jr., two sisters; Ruby Lee Overbay and Mary Lee Crenshaw. Bill is survived by his wife; Mildred Cullip Lee, sons; Darryl Lee (Mary), Rodney Lee (Betty), daughters; Joyce Lee Boswell (Chuck), Judy Lee DeBusk, and Patricia Lee Billings (Mark). He is also survived by his grandchildren who call him Poppy; Dr. Donny Lee, (Teresa), Jennifer Sullivan (Tony), Kristie Ralston, Chace Boswell, Jason Boswell (Trish), Lindsay Allison (Andy), Jess DeBusk (Jessica), Mindy Estep and Kimberly Widener (David). His 22 great-grandchildren adored him and called him Big Poppy, with a great-great grandchild on the way. Bill is survived by his brother; Percy Lee (Ella) and their son, Rabon Lee (Rachel). He has a special daughter-in-law; Connie Swartz Lee. He has a special niece; Glenna Hunt (Beryle) and their daughter Erin; the entire Helton, Counts, and Cullip families, and numerous other nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Special friends include Frank Lewis, Blaine Ward, Gary Woodward, Bird Barker, many other friends, and best family friend ever, Emma Lee Call. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 2021 at D. R. Henderson Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Haynes officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to funeral services. Burial will follow at Mt. Rose Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
